The Power of "We"

It’s the power of “we” that defines a community foundation, and it certainly is what makes Madison Community Foundation so amazing. And when I say “we,” that includes you. When we announced our grants earlier this week, we were not only celebrating the work of the organizations who were receiving the grants. The grant announcement also was a celebration of what becomes possible when friends and neighbors come together to support the programs and opportunities that make our community stronger.

The more than $600,000 we awarded comes primarily from MCF’s Community Impact Fund. This Fund is supported by thousands of people across the Madison area, with gifts large and small each year. In 2019, gifts to MCF ranged from less than a dollar to $1.8 million. And while the large donations may stand out, half of the gifts made to MCF are $100 or less. But those contributions, pooled together and invested for the future, become something much greater. They become support for an organization’s capital campaign for a larger facility. They become the ability to hire a paid staff person for the first time. They become a new splash pad that will help ensure that children have a safe and engaging place to be outdoors and play.

This is just a taste of what is made possible by your support.

Because of you, 2019 was a fantastic year for MCF. Contributions totaled more than $31 million. These went to both permanent endowments housed at MCF and to funds that “pass through” to support campaigns such as the Madison Youth Arts Center or the Middleton Public Library’s “Next Chapter” campaign.

MCF invests the money donated to permanent endowments. Once again, in 2019 we are on track to achieve investment returns in the top 10% of community foundations nationwide. These strong returns mean we have more funds available for grantmaking. It means the nonprofits whose endowments we manage have more income from their funds. We take this responsibility very seriously, and were proud to distribute $18 million from these funds last year.

Thank you.
