Passing on the Value of Philanthropy
Amanda White strives to live with purpose in both her professional and personal life. As a consultant to nonprofit organizations in the Madison area, she’s well-positioned to do that. "Living a good life means considering more than just yourself; it's about recognizing the broader world and our role within it," Amanda reflected. “And that’s what I’m trying to teach my son.”
Amanda believes that while empathy may be innate, philanthropy is a learned behavior. That’s why she actively involves her son, Gregory, in decisions regarding their family's charitable giving. "Every year during the Big Share, Gregory selects organizations aligned with his interests, often focusing on environmental conservation and equity initiatives," Amanda said.
“I often make these donations in Gregory’s name,” Amanda said. “One organization sent him back a book with a special note, and that really had an impact on him.”
Creating a Legacy of Giving
When Amanda decided recently to create a legacy plan for her giving, she chose to create the Amanda White Family Fund at Madison Community Foundation. It will be funded through her estate, and Gregory will serve as the fund’s advisor – recommending distributions to the organizations that he wants to support.
"This fund isn't just about leaving behind a financial legacy," Amanda said. "It's a testament to our values and a reminder to Gregory of the enduring importance of philanthropy."
Becoming a Part of a Network
Choosing MCF was a natural decision for Amanda. “I am familiar with MCF because of my work in the community and knew that when Gregory is in charge of the fund, he would get support and would be part of the network of people in the community that MCF works with,” Amanda explained.
“MCF plays a vital role in our community,” Amanda continued. “It’s a wonderful funder. But just as important, MCF is in the business of helping people learn how to be philanthropic. Because people respect and trust MCF, it’s a place where they are comfortable learning how to be philanthropic, or about organizations that may align with their interests. And that’s all so important for growing philanthropy in our community overall.”
Carrying On the Spirit of Philanthropy
In explaining why she chose to plan her legacy at a stage when many are focused on career growth, Amanda pointed to the value she places on giving back throughout her life. "I see in my own work that legacy gifts often are the largest gifts that a nonprofit receives," she said. "Though I'm not exceptionally wealthy, I believe in contributing what I can, now and through my estate."
Amanda's philosophy on philanthropy extends beyond financial contributions. She emphasizes the importance of volunteering and community involvement as well. "Philanthropy is about more than dollars; it's about actively participating and making a difference, regardless of the amount," she explained. "Even a modest donation can have a significant impact when combined with others."
"Our community boasts incredible philanthropists, but it's vital to ensure that this spirit endures," Amanda said. " We need to pass the torch to the next generation so that caring and generosity remain fundamental values in Madison."
