A Loving Tribute for a Lover of Animals

Shirley Kubly

Shirley A. Kubly had a lifelong passion for animals and a remarkable talent for connecting with them, whether domestic or wild. Her dedication to helping others learn about and appreciate these creatures was evident throughout her life, especially in her work with children.

Shirley devoted her time to raising awareness about the importance of preserving species and their habitats, and the humane treatment of animals. “It filled a passion in me,” she once said.

A lifelong volunteer, Shirley contributed to a wide range of organizations, from the Monroe Art Center to serving as both a Girl Scout and Cub Scout leader. In 1992, she began volunteering at the Henry Vilas Zoo in Madison, seamlessly blending her love for animals with her commitment to volunteerism.

At the Vilas Zoo, Shirley embraced numerous roles, starting with the education program and later joining the Zoological Society Board of Directors. She was instrumental in the development and construction of the Polar Bear Exhibit. Even during her travels, the zoo was never far from Shirley’s thoughts; she delighted in visiting other zoos to gather new ideas for improving the Vilas Zoo.

Shirley passed away in 2022 at the age of 87. To honor her legacy and sustain her support for the Vilas Zoo, her husband and her son, Pat Kubly and Ryan Kubly, established the Shirley Kubly Fund for Henry Vilas Zoo. This fund will provide annual support for the zoo's education, conservation and animal welfare programs – a fitting tribute to a woman who prioritized sharing her love of animals with the community.
