Grant #7: Shine On Madison
A $65,000 grant to launch Shine On Madison, the first annual seasonal lighting celebration for Downtown Madison, helped support 130 events, 50 holiday planters, 12 community displays and 100 snowflake lights.
Presented by Madison Community Foundation and Madison’s Central Business Improvement District (BID), the six-week event featured a holiday lighting ceremony, a celebration of the history of the Capitol, a special focus on downtown retailers, enjoyment of our arts, and a strong sense of community. Shine On Madison is made possible through partnerships with BID and area property owners, businesses, community organizations and area nonprofits.
Shine On Madison kicked off Saturday, November 18, 2017, with a Seasonal Lighting Ceremony at 6:08 p.m. (the specific time is a nod to Madison’s area code 608) at the top of State Street and Capitol Square.

Madison's 1st Annual Shine On Madison on Nov. 18 featured favorite mascots plugging in the lights downtown and around Capitol Square. |
Artists and lighting designers brought downtown streets, street corners, parks and public spaces to life with special light displays along State Street and around Capitol Square—from The Festive Forum featuring a giant, multi-color tree near the corner of State and Carroll streets, to The Groovy Groove, where an interactive grove of trees responds and interacts to sound, to The Frosty Flicker Forest that provided the perfect place for a Princess Party, a photo shoot or a hot chocolate.
Creative community partner displays also illuminated the downtown landscape. Local organizations volunteering their time and talents included Make-A-Wish, Clean Lakes Alliance, Grace Episcopal Church, Theatre LILA, Madison Reading Project, OutReach, and B-Cycle.
